PROGRAM NOTE

Stellar Cartography takes its title from the famed Star Trek franchise, and is the name of a three-dimensional map room on the Starship Enterprise. While there is no connection musically to Star Trek, this piece takes inspiration from star maps and the art of mapping the stars, galaxies and other astronomical objects. Star maps, with their multitude of dots and lines representing celestial objects and their astrological relationships look very much like notes on a page of music and the piece reflects an amazement in recognizing this relationship. The piece is in three sections and uses a recurring rhythmic pattern, a kind of musical map lines that traces and outlines musical ideas.
