FROMM MUSIC FOUNDATION COMMISSION

Michael-Thomas Foumai has been awarded a $12,000 commission from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University. The new work will be composed for Philadelphia-based flutist Mimi Stillman.

The piece will draw inspiration from the ancient Hawaiian religion. Hawaiian mythology is relatively unknown outside of the islands, but embodies a wealth of rich folklore whose philosophy would serve as the thematic and structural framework. Inspiration of the piece comes from the Hawaiian version of the creation story, a chant known as the Kumulipo (darkness or origin). Hawaiians believed that the origin of life began in darkness and spanning 2012 colorful poetic lines, this chant illustrates the birth of the islands, animals, creatures of the sea and genealogy of the gods and man. The chant is divided into eras (wā), and in each age some form of life is born.
