PROGRAM NOTE

Composed for violinist Laura-Jean Keller and the Punahou String Orchestra, this work is a fantasy based on a Guangdong Folk Song entitled Moonlight. The lyrics are printed below.

The moon shines clearly on the earth.

My dear son, be good and go to bed.

Your mother has to sow in the rice-paddies tomorrow while your grandfather watches over the heard.

When you grow older, my son, you will also help your grandfather.

The moon shines clearly on the earth.

My dear son, be good and go to bed.

Your father has to catch fishes and prawns tomorrow while your grandmother knits the fishing-net.

When you grow older, my son, you will also be an excellent fisherman.

The moon shines clearly on the earth.

On New Year’s Eve, we shall have a house full of crops.

Everybody, old and young, will be joyous.

My dear, close your eyes and sleep until the next bright moon.
