Makana (b.1979)

Nā Molokama (2021), 4 minutes

Original Music & English Lyrics By Makana

Hawaiian Language Lyrics By Alfred Apaka

Arranged for Orchestra by Michael-Thomas Foumai

The work is scored for 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, various percussion, harp, strings, voice, ipu heke and guitar.

Nā Molokama was found in an old Hilo manuscript. Nāmolokama is the waterfall in the Nāmolokama mountains at the head of Hanalei Valley in Kauaʻi. Makana’s unprecedented new interpretation is set in the minor mode, a rarity for Hawaiian music, and in true Makana form, combines multi-cultural musical elements of India and the Middle East with the ancient mystical sounds of Hawaiʻi. The original text and english translation by Mary Pukui are included below. © MTF

Rumbles
The waterfall of Nāmolokama
It roars before
The face of the cliffs
The sound reaches the cloud banks
How I long to be there again

Chorus:
Rumbles, rumbles, rumbles
The waterfall of Nāmolokama rumbles

Rumbles, rumbles, rumbles
Roars, roars,
Roars, roars
