PROGRAM NOTE
Concerto Grosso was composed for the Kaplan Fellows of the Bowdoin International Music Festival. The Kaplan Fellowship is a 6-week program devoted to the study of chamber and solo repetoire in Brunswick, ME. Fellowships are given to instrumentalist on violin, viola, cello, piano, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. In the summer of 2015, I was fortunate to be the festival's inaugural fellow in composition. When the opportunity arose to compose a work for all the Kaplan Fellows, it seemed destined that the form of the Concerto Grosso was the most fitting to showcase their extraordinary talent and to unleash their collective mastery as a whole. The work is structured with several groupings of instruments in dialogue and explores baroque figurations in a more contemproary musical vocabulary.
